On Wednesday, January 21st, the 5th Anniversary of Citizens United, 7 courageous 99Rise leaders stood up in the chamber of the United States Supreme Court to interrupt the justices, speak out against corruption, and call on Americans to take action to defend democracy.
The Supreme Court 7 spoke truth to power, were arrested, and spent the night in jail. Two of the SC7, Margaret Johnson and Curt Ries, pled guilty and were fined $150, given time served, and barred from the Supreme Court for a year. The other five will return to court next month.

I stand with the Supreme Court 7. We the People must overturn Citizens United, reverse McCutcheon, and reclaim democracy for all in America.
Kai Newkirk commented on Activists disrupt proceedings at SCOTUS: Demand Free and Fair Elections, End to Corruption 2014-05-08 00:26:48 -0700Yes – they did press charges. I pled guilty to 3 federal misdemeanors and was given a sentence of time served (I was in jail overnight when arrested, 2 days technically) in April. I am also barred from the Supreme Court grounds for a year and must pay the standard fee of $50 per convicted charge to the Victims of Violent Crime Fund. SCOTUS counsel pressed the prosecutors to push for a greater sentence but the judge was sympathetic. Well worth it – now we are building on the momentum created by this action with our California March for Democracy.

More than 8 in 10 Americans now agree that we must put a stop to unlimited outside political spending, and soon our elected officials will be forced to respond to this clear mandate for change.* But after the most expensive election in history, our bought Congress will only be held accountable through nonviolent action on a truely massive scale.
So that's exactly what we'll do. By signing this pledge, you join a growing Nonviolent Army of deep patriots willing to put their bodies on the line to engage in the Largest Civil Disobedience Action in American History. For us to make history, we first need the pledge of 10,000 people like you. Add your name below and together we will win a democracy that finally responds to the needs of the 99%.
I pledge to be one of 10,000 people who will risk arrest in the Largest Civil Disobedience Action in American History in order to get big money out of politics.Endorse
Dark money has no place in a democracy.
First, GOP lawmakers (and their corporate sponsors) signed our democracy’s death warrant by blocking passage of the DISCLOSE Act. Then last month, as if to add insult to injury, the DC Court of Appeals reveresed a lower court decision that would have required outside political spending groups to disclose some of their anonymous donors.* American’s last defence against a flood of unlimited Dark Money - public transparency - has been erased.
Big Money is buying the 2012 elections in secret. To escape accountability for their political spending, Wall Street corporations and super-rich donors like the Koch Brothers are pumping upwards of $900 million dollars into shadowy tax-exempt nonprofit groups that can spend unlimited money influencing elections without having to reveal a single donor.*
Let’s face it - our bought Congress no longer represents the will of the people. 88% of American voters think that “all campaign contributions and expenditures should be publicly disclosed.”* And they are right. In the words of Bill Moyers, “three things don’t go together: money, secrecy, democracy."*
Dark Money has got to go. If Congress will not act to save American democracy - we will. It’s time to take the demand for disclosure directly to the worst of the 1%, and insist they immediately release all records of any anonymous political expenditures. The Koch Brothers of the world think we don’t know or care what they’re up to: add your name to the petition and show them they’re wrong.
We delivered this petition to Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase on September 28th. Both have failed to respond, and 8 were arrested in Los Angeles when they peacefully refused to leave until BofA complied. But we will keep coming back, and our civil disobedience actions will only continue to grow until our simple demand is made impossible to ignore.
We need at least 1,000 people to sign on to this call before our next wave of actions mid-October so the deep patriots who will risk arrest to ensure our voice is heard will know a growing movement has got their back!GOAL: 1,020 signatures
Petition: As concerned Americans committed to the integrity of our democracy, we call on Wall Street and all corporations, trade associations and 501(c)4 nonprofits to immediately and fully disclose to the public the amount, source, and destination of any and all anonymous or unreported political expenditures.
Stand with Kai as he marches
I am marching because unless we end corruption and win real democracy the possibility of a just, livable future for everyone I love may be lost. My life has taught me that standing up to do the right thing to be there for those we love - no matter how hard it is - is the most important thing at the end of the day. Right now, that means marching to move everyone who believes in political equality to stand up and do something to defend our democracy.
