This morning 5 citizen activist members of 99Rise disrupted the proceedings of the Supreme Court on the eve of the 1 year anniversary of the outrageous McCutcheon v. FEC ruling, which pushed our elections a giant step closer to being billionaire-controlled auctions.
The McCutcheon ruling, decided 5 to 4 by the Roberts-led corporate majority, eliminated the $123,400 cap on the aggregate amount of money that the super rich can contribute directly to candidates, PACs, and parties in an election cycle. In combination with the infamous 2010 Citizens United ruling, McCutcheon represents a shameful assault by the Court on our democracy and a betrayal of its duty to uphold the "One Person, One Vote" principle of political equality. We took this action in the tradition of nonviolent civil disobedience, with great respect for the Court as an institution and the Constitution it is sworn to uphold. By our determined action we hope to demonstrate to the justices of the Supreme Court - and all government leaders - that their complicity in corruption will be met with unyielding resistance. We represent the vast majority of Americans who agree that the domination of our elections and our political life by the money of billionaires and corporations is wrong and needs to end. More and more are taking a stand and joining the movement for reform. We the People will continue to raise our voices, louder and louder together, until our call for change is heard and free & fair elections are established in America.
